In an executive order issued on August 6, US President Donald Trump gave the social media app TikTok, 45 days to find a buyer.

The company said that it was completely shocked by the order outlining the ban.

The order pointed to the app’s links to the Communist Party of China, saying all data collected by Tik Tok threatens to allow the Communist Party of China access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information. Donald Trump issued a similar order against China’s “Wechat”.

The US President has already warned to ban Tik Tok in the US, citing national security concerns, and the company is now in talks to sell its American Business to Microsoft.

Tik Tok app, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, said that it has attempted to engage with the US government for nearly a year “in good faith”. However, it further said:

“What we encountered instead was the administration paid no attention to the facts, dictated terms of an agreement without going through the standard procedure, and tried to insert itself into negotiations between private businesses.

The executive order specifically mentioned India’s June 29 ban on Tik Tok and 58 other Chinese Apps, which the Indian government decided to ban, citing compilation of data, it is mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defense of India.

The ban of these apps in India was followed by the June 15 clash on the border, while in the US, it was the latest step by the Trump administration amid a trade and technology war with China. Both India and the US have expressed concerns about data security.
